PHILOSOPHY

The network’s philosophy

Nursing, in order to play an active role in health care, should be based on scientific knowledge that emerges through research. The aims of HSNRE are to enhance and disseminate research as well as to organize continuing education programs. Nursing Research Network is a new institution created by the Hellenic Society of Nursing Research and Education (HSNRE), running since 2009, to promote nursing research. It is based on a structured framework of support and cooperation between "researchers" and "partners" in order to conduct research studies.

Network aims

• Implementing research at national and international level.

• Providing support to nurse-researchers facilitating cooperation amongst themselves.

• Providing a flexible framework for nurses’ continuing education on new data, especially in relation both research and generally nursing.

• Enabling nurses throughout the country to participate in an extensive research process.

• The development of cooperation among nurse-researchers, especially in areas requiring highly specialized or structured collection of information.

• Time and cost reduction of the research effort.

• The contribution of nursing research to improve health care.

The "Principal Investigator" (PI)

The PI is responsible for the research project. He/she has the idea for the implementation of research and has the overall responsibility. The PI may be any nurse who wants to conduct a study within the framework of the network with the support of the HSNRE

The HSNRE supports research studies for which research groups are established. In this case, the Principal Investigators are all the members of the research group.

PI is considered the person (or group) who submits the research proposal (Research Study Support Application) to the network and has the overall responsibility for the research process as well as for all the communication with the Network’s coordinators.

Terms of cooperation:

PI is considered the person (or group) who submits the research proposal (Research Study Support Application) to the network and has the overall responsibility for the research process as well as for all the communication with the Network’s coordinators.

• The PI should be a nurse. In exceptional cases, and after the review of the scientific committee, a research proposal may be submitted by a PI who is not a nurse.

• The principal investigator must be registered member of the HSNRE in good standing.

• The PI should follow the ethical guidelines which rule the conduct of research studies (see p. Ethics).

The "Partners"

The term “partners” refers to those who accept the Network’s philosophy and aims and through their participation will contribute in a practical way in the process of a research effort by CONDUCTING A RESEARCH STUDY AT A LOCAL LEVEL.

Partners may express their interest for future research studies by completing in advance the relevant application (Participation Application Form).

After completing the application, the partners may be invited by the Network’s Steering Committee to participate in an upcoming research study, if the study is relevant to them and may be asked to conduct a study at a local level.

Terms of cooperation:

• Partners should be nurses. In special cases partners may be other professionals whose contribution will be required, based on the research proposal, for the research implementation.

• They should respect the ethical guidelines which govern scientific research as described in national and international codes of conduct as well as the specific points mentioned by the HSNRE (ethics page).

• Participation as a partner does not entail any obligation to the Nursing Research Network and HSNRE other than ethics, as described on the website of the Nursing Research Network. Participation in the Nursing Research Network does not require registration at the HSNRE.

• The method and timeframe of partner(s)’ selection, depends on the period and type of the study that is submitted for the support of the Nursing Research Network and the partner(s)’ relevance in working with the current subject.

• The application to be a "partner" is in effect, even if for any reason the partner is unable to participate in some research studies of the Nursing Research Network.

• The "partners" whenever they wish, may apply for their permanent removal from the partners’ registry of the Nursing Research Network, which happens only after their application and without any further commitment.

• The personal details registered in the partner participation application form are treated by the HSNRE and the Steering Committee of the Nursing Research Network, as strictly confidential. They are used solely for the operation of the Nursing Research Network. They are not transferred to others and they are permanently deleted after the partner’s application.

Principles of Operation

The PI initially submits an Application for supporting a Research Study and then he/she submits the Research Protocol to the Scientific Committee.

With this application, the PI accepts the terms of cooperation of the Network. Following the decision of supporting the Research Proposal, the Steering Committee shall find Research Partners and the Research work is carried out.

Candidates should take under consideration the following:

Every Nurse has the right to submit a Research Proposal, as it is described in the relevant text (see Principal Investigator paragraph).

The Research Proposal should be within the framework of the scientific area of Nursing Science.

The Research Proposal should only be submitted in electronic form to the Scientific Committee of HSNRE (Application of Research Study Support).

Submitted applications are reviewed and discussed by the HSNRE Scientific Committee, before deciding whether or not to support the proposal.

The HSNRE Scientific Committee does not evaluate the Research Proposals funded by other bodies.

Network Scientific Supervision

The Network serves as a link between the PI and the research partners. HSNRE aims at involving a large number of Nurses from all over Greece for the promotion of research activities. To facilitate the Network management there are two supervising committees; the Scientific Committee and the Steering Committee.

The Scientific Committee

The Scientific Committee is appointed by the Board of the HSNRE The Scientific Committee is responsible for the scientific control of the Network and the review of the submitted research proposals. After the suggestion of the HSNRE President, Mrs Christina Marvaki, during the Board meeting on 13.05.11, the new Scientific Committee has been accepted, as follows:

Research Ethics & Deontology

HSNRE and the NRN follow the standards and the regulations of the Greek and International Ethics on Research and respect the copyright (see below relevant links).

   1. Code of Nursing Ethics (Greek Low No. 216 18/7/2001/in Greek).

1. A nurse who carries out a Study should disseminate, primarily in the Nursing Community, the conclusions of his/her Research Study.

2. In every scientific presentation, the Nurse must indicate all the partners who contributed to this work. In addition, the body (NRN) which supported the Research Study should be stated.

3. The general principle of the HSNRE is that knowledge and copyright which are the outcome of Research Studies belong to the researchers who have conducted the study.
